On July 16, 2013, Jake Koenigsdorf was found alone in his apartment dead from a heroin overdose. He was just 21 years old. Like millions of others, his opiate addiction started with pain pills. Heroin use is unfortunately one of the easiest and cheapest options for kids, like Jake, who get hooked on opiates and end up not being able to find long-term recovery solution. You see, people with a Substance Use Disorder have three options 1. find a solution 2. get locked up or 3. die. Until one of these happen, their active addiction is like a tornado ripping through the lives of everyone in their path. The wreckage impacting us all—including those of you who have lost loved ones or personal property to drug-related theft or DUI’s, accidents and the list goes on.
The barriers to recovery are numerous and challenging. Jake always asked for help. He and his family had to navigate the process without assistance or personal experience. Jake’s journey was proof that we must be better, we must do better. In Jake’s name and for all those just like him, we strive to be a connection, a source of hope, and an access point.
We incorporated as a Not-for-Profit in the state of Delaware in November 2013 and received 501c3 status from the IRS in early 2014. With the help from public donations, business supports and grants, we have been able to provide direction and support for many people from across the nation on their journey.
We, as a Foundation, vow to continue this fight. Will they all succeed? To be frank, if there was an immediate cure or fix, there would be no need for this Foundation. Our goal is to help connect the families with support and education while providing opportunities for people with Substance Use Disorder to create a solution that will ensure them a lifetime of recovery. We hope the ones we help will find their purpose by helping others find recovery and their purpose.
