A few weeks ago, I took a five-mile beach walk on the lovely beaches of Myrtle, South Carolina, of course. I went with my friend Audrey. We walked, we talked, we just “were” for all five miles. It was good for my soul and my soles; I love a good beach sand pedicure.
Driving back to Audrey’s, I answered a call from a guy in recovery.
Chris asked me how my day was going (a good sign of recovery and good humaning). I told him my friend and I had just walked five miles on the beach.
Chris responded, “What? You CHOSE to walk five miles? For fun?”
“Last time I walked five miles, I was homeless and walked with a broken suitcase held together with anything I could find to hold it together.”
“In fact, I think I had to find a place to stash that suitcase to go to my job.”
“I drive today, but I can remember that suitcase and that walk – vividly.”
Two people, two five-mile walks, very different circumstances.
Chris and I are more the same than we are different. I love that we each have a different perspective and that we can share ours, without judgment, for no other reason than connecting with another traveler on our life’s journey.
