The voices in your head (mine too)

What is the committee in your mind?

It’s the set of voices that chatter on a near-constant basis and have something to say and a judgment about every situation you find yourself in. It’s the set of mental patterns you’ve developed over time that leads you to over-function, be self-critical, and ignore your own needs. It’s the set of voices that leads you to suffer unnecessarily

They permeate nearly every moment of our lives, influencing our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

It’s time to recognize them and begin to disobey the harmful members.

The Unhelpful Members:

  • The Inner Critic
  • The Judge
  • The Task-Master
  • The Martyr
  • The Victim
  • The People Pleaser
  • The Worrier

The biggest goal of the negative committee is to keep us as far away from our present reality as possible.

Why? Because the present is where we find peace and joy…and the committee will have none of that!

In life, we get the ‘negatives’ for nothing. We must work for the positive. We must consciously seek out the good, the positive, focusing on what we can do instead of worrying about things beyond our control, which will never happen. (Insert the serenity prayer here!)

Now, the more helpful committee members. These are members who will not show up uninvited. Rather, they need more of a formal invitation to speak. However, if you can summon them to the conversation, you’ll find yourself in a much better, more confident, aligned position to move forward in the way you truly want to.

The Helpful Members:

  • The Coach – What would you tell someone else?
  • The Wise Advisor – Will (blank) matter in 6 months or 6 years?
  • The Asset – your strengths, skills, resources

So, how do you fire the negative committee living in your head?

  1. Tell the negative committee to SDASU – Sit Down and Shut Up.
  2. Get present – in the moment – use your five senses
  3. Surround yourself with positive, affirming messages. Keep the commitments you make to yourself – but don’t over-commit.
  4. Identify your strengths and incorporate them.
  5. Set goals for what you want in life, take daily action towards your goals and track your progress. Every step in the direction you desire to go will encourage another step.
